EFF takes election campaign to Gugulethu

The EFF in the Western Cape has taken its local government election campaign trail to the Fawu Hostel in Gugulethu on the Cape Flats. This as the dwellers grapple with service delivery challenges.
The party’s mayoral candidate for the City of Cape Town, Nontando Nolutshungu, visited the area to engage with residents.
They claim the City of Cape Town is refusing to provide basic services until a debt amounting to approximately R3 million that FAWU owes it.
Nolutshungu says they are committed to ensuring service delivery.
“Our main aim is to make sure that we live in a city where all the residents of the city are treated equally. Refuse removal is done on a regular basis, particularly in these areas. In the township, people are living on top of each other, and you cannot be collecting refuse once a week. You have to do it regularly, even if it’s three times a week.”
Meanwhile, some dwellers of the Fawu Hostel say they are pinning their hopes on the EFF.
Resident Siyabulela Majelumane says blocked sewers and uncollected waste are posing a threat to their health.
“We are staying in a bad situation. It starts with sewer drains and for seven months now we’re without electricity. We use gas, paraffin. No service delivery. When we complain to the city, they say we are on private property; FAWU (Hostel in Gugulethu) owes R3 million.”
